April 4th, 1986
At around one in the morning, reactor number four at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded. Four workers at the plant were killed instantly, and within the next two days, the people of Chernobyl were evacuated to keep from becoming poisoned by the radiation now sweeping through the area. Wildlife suffered from the radiation and became mutated, and for the next thirty-three years, toxins would be seeping into the earth, the soil of Chernobyl taking it up like an eager sponge.

In the next several decades, Chernobyl was repopulated. It was a perfectly good plot of land, as far as good old America was concerned, and what was keeping them from setting up shop right there? It was an area with a rich history, and offering a new start to children of America in a far-off place full of magic and wonder would turn out to be quite profitable. The US government paid for a few people to move over there and attract others, and as they'd expected, more followed. They rebuilt the city from the ground up, putting in malls and condominiums and leisure centers. The incident with the reactor was thirty-three years ago. They weren't in danger any more.
The earthquake that took place on May 23rd seemed to be of little or no consequence at the time. At around 10:30 AM, when children were in classes and parents were in meetings and conference calls, there was a tremor. It wasn't a large one, and some people didn't even notice it. It went up on the news within the hours and the citizens were laughing about how they'd just suffered their first earthquake. That tremor was small enough to go by unnoticed by some, but large enough to stir up some extra life underground.
That night, the corpses in the ground that had been laying there, marinading in radioactive material for all those years opened their eyes and screamed through mouthfuls of dirt. The sound was masked by six feet of soil, but that night, every corpse screamed and clawed their way to the surface.
2020
It's been a year since the earthquake, and since the night of the attack. The population of Chernobyl was cut in half on the day of May 24th. Things no humans had ever seen tore through the streets of Prypiat that day, and a year later, humans no longer rule the area. They do. There is no more government there, no more money or work or homelessness. Everyone is the same. Everyone is just trying to survive. The area has been quarantined by the Ukrainian government and nobody is allowed to enter or leave the area. If you're in Chernobyl, you're stuck. It's you against the monsters that may have been reasonable human beings once, but now, all they want is a taste of your flesh.
So pick up your bat, your chainsaw, your hammer or your shotgun, because you're chained to Chernobyl.
