It is 1982, except Harry Potter was never born.
Harry Potter, whose second birthday should have been approaching, never existed. Neville Longbottom was never born, either. There was never a prophecy about a boy who would save the world from Lord Voldemort's clutches and bear a scar as proof. That means the Order of the Phoenix has no deux ex machina. That means the resistance is losing. The Order is now resists in name alone, for those few who have not yet perished are exhausted by the death that surrounds them. Most do not think they can fight any longer. After Albus Dumbledore's death, the Order was forced to relocate - and they have relocated into a decrepit, molding flat. They are losing members almost as fast as they are losing hope.
Then there's Hogwarts, which has become the headquarters for all Death Eater activity. After the death of the beloved Headmaster, many chose to take their children out of school for fear it was unsafe - but, well, then there are the unlucky others. Those that were not killed in the takeover have been forced into servitude. And the Death Eaters can do whatever they want whenever they want. Sometimes rumors escape to the public, whispers about the horrors taking place inside the castle. For the most part, the Ministry does its best to cover those up, lest everything falls into anarchy. But then there is the matter of the Ministry itself, in such inner turmoil it is a wonder it has not fallen to pieces. Despite the many imperius curses being thrown around at Voldemort's bidding, it has been so far impossible to reach the Minister of Magic himself. So they are creating a plan to murder him and make it look an accident, so one of the Death Eaters will be promoted. Then they are certain there will be no stopping them. Under the reign of Bartemius Crouch Sr., the aurors are using tactics hardly more moral sound than the tactics of the Death Eaters in an effort to stop them.
There are a few people left who want to fight. There is secret talk in the Order among two of the remaining members and two others that another organization be formed. But how can that be enough to stop the reign of the Dark Lords? There is no Harry Potter, there is no balance between good and evil, there is only this, and this is crumbling to pieces before their very eyes.
These are no longer cracks. This is an abyss and it is spreading. It is no longer possible to find anyone who remains a little unbroken?.
