~ history :
There was a saying in her family, that they were descendants of Anubis. The jackal-headed god that played judge and jury to the dead, also the one to prepare them for their journey to Duat. And it was because of this that on full moons, those who had come of age shifted forms into that of a canine, fur as black as night, as the fur of Anubis himself. Though they were highly proud of this fact, they dare not boast of their extraordinary gift for reasons unknown. It was her family's duty to not only guard and maintain the temple of Anubis, but what to this day is referred to as the lost city was also her family's to guard and protect. It was their legacy and something which had been passed down from generation to generation. This was what Aziza had been born into. Her father was the high priest of Anubis and mother, one of the priestesses who was among the priests and priestesses who maintained the temple. Aziza was the first of their children and a beauty to behold. Her father proclaimed that truly, this was a sign that the gods themselves smiled down on their union for having blessed their first child with such beauty.
As a child, Aziza ran about the temple, exploring and playing with her little brother, whom was 3 years younger than her. Their life was a sheltered one, more for Aziza than Asim, her brother. But that was because their father, Chigaru, feared the thought of someone wanting his precious daughter for their own. The village they lived by was small, after all, but it was a common thing for people working for the pharaoh or any of his sons to come into the villages looking for the beauties among the common folk to be a part of their harems. Chigaru would not have that for his child and hid her away from the world because of it. However, with the assistance of Asim, Aziza snuck into the small village every once in a while, never once getting caught by their father. Though she knew of her father's worries and always made sure to keep her face covered during these visits, Aziza loved her time spent out in the villages. There was always so much to take in, all the little stands selling all the many trinkets or food. Aziza loved to wander the market and see what was available, though always tried her best to make sure not to wander off from Asim. Asim was the one who knew his way around after all. If left on her own, Aziza was most certain she would get lost. After all, if left to her own devices in a location she was not familiar with, Aziza always found herself dreadfully lost in almost no time at all.
Most days, when Aziza was roughly 7 years of age, her mother would teach both Aziza and Asim about their family legacy, Anubis, and all the other gods. They were taught of proper worship and their laws, everything that was proper for future priests and priestesses of Anubis to be aware of. Aziza took to it all in stride, absorbing the information like a sponge and applying it all to her life. She was a happy child and loved it all. Always bearing a bright smile on her adorable face and her giggles always trailing after her as she ran about. Asim, her brother, was also her best friend and playmate. The two did nearly everything together and it was almost impossible to ever see one without the other. As the duo grew, this didn't change. Almost all their lives, the two were well-aware of the transformation of not only their parents, but some of the other priests and priestesses of Anubis during the full moon. They had even witnessed the transformations from afar every so often. Aziza was somewhat scared of this. Unsure what to think of this transformation. It scared her a bit, to be perfectly honest. But mostly because it looked so painful to her. She feared that pain. Asim always tried his best to assure his elder sister that all would be well, and in return, Aziza pretended that Asim's soothing words worked to calm her down, because she did not want to make her little brother worry.
When Aziza was roughly in her late teens, on one occasion of slipping into the nearby village unbeknownst to their father, Aziza saw the strangest thing, woman dancing. Aziza asked them why they danced as they did was was in awe to find out it was a form of prayer to the earth. It was amazing to her, and suddenly, Aziza desired to know this form of prayer. Sneaking away from the temple on her own became a daily routine for Aziza as she snuck out to meet up with the woman she had seen dancing. In time, they taught her and when she reached her early twenties, Aziza fully understood it. Every night, before she and her brother went to sleep, Aziza would always tell Asim of what she learned, her excitement evident in the tone of her voice. She was so happy with her dancing she felt the need to dance always, but Asim warned her to be careful. Reminding her she should never dance in public for fear of being seen, and she should also never dance in the temple, for fear of one of the other priests or priestesses spotting her and reporting it to their father. Both brother and sister knew better than to anger their father, so Aziza was careful. Or, at least, she tried to be.
So, one full moon night, after the descendants of Anubis had left as they did in their canine forms, and all else were asleep, Aziza took this as an opportunity to dance for the statue of the jackal-headed god. After all, it was in the dead of night, and everyone was either out or asleep. Who would see her? It seemed perfectly safe to Aziza, so with her Anubis mask on, she danced about before the great statue, entirely aware she had gained herself an audience.
His name was Sefu, he was a warrior of Memphis who had survived a fight somewhere far off in the sands and somehow managed to find his way to the temple seeking refuge. He had crawled through the sands with a broken leg for days and was greatly tired and in need of water. When he first spotted the great temple of Anubis, he had thought it to be a mirage, and yet, the flickering of the torch light from within the vast halls lured him towards it none the less. With great struggle, he managed his way up the marble steps of the temple and managed to drag himself half inside when he lifted his head and first caught sight of the masked maiden dancing before the statue. That sight alone was the last thing he saw before sleep became too great a thing to resist. The sound of the warrior collapsing against the marble floor shocked Aziza and caused her to jump in fright at the sight of the strange man collapsed at the entrance whom hadn't been there last she saw. Quickly, she removed her mask before running over to the stranger and realizing he needed help, she ran to Asim's chambers and woke him, telling him of the stranger at their doorstep. Leaving the mask in her brother's room, both brother and sister brought the stranger into a secret chamber that connected Aziza's chambers to Asim's. The siblings worked through the night, fixing up the stranger's wounds as well as giving him water to help with the dehydration. Soon enough, the sun was on the horizon and their parents, as well as the rest of the priests and priestesses were all returning to the temple or waking for the day.
Worried for the stranger's well being, and unsure as to how the adults would react to the stranger, the siblings took turns going about their daily duties and tending on the wounded stranger, though he slept through most of the day, the stranger was never without either one or the other by his side.
While the sun was setting and Asim was paying attention to Chigaru's daily ranting, Sefu had finally opened his eyes to see Aziza's hazel orbs staring down at him. Aziza couldn't explain it, but there was something about the stranger, who had introduced himself as Sefu, that drew him to her. Because she couldn't explain the attraction, she pretended it was non-existant and upon her brother's return to the secret room, she introduced him to her brother. The siblings kept up with their little schedule of sorts the following day and so on until Sefu was fully recuperated, Chigaru and Kamilah, along with all the rest of the priests and priestesses, none the wiser. During this time, Aziza had decided Sefu annoyed her, not understanding his jokes in the slightest, but he and Asim had developed a brotherly bond and were the closest of friends in that short amount of time. Soon enough, it was time to help Sefu out of the temple and sneak him into the nearby village which Asim and Aziza had snuck out to often in their childhood. They waited for the next full moon and when all was quiet, on swift feet, Asim and Aziza led Sefu into the village. Where he would go and venture off to was now entirely his own choice. When they were sure Sefu was fine and settled in his lodgings, Asim and Aziza hurriedly returned to the temple they called home, scarcely making it home before the sun had risen enough to awaken those within the temple and before their family could return.
That day, their mother was the first to question them of their odd behaviour. However, Aziza and Asim were well-versed in the game of excuses and Asim had taken the fall for the two of them, claiming that for the past while, he had been hearing the strangest sounds at night and had been continuously bothering his elder sister about it. This of course, called their father's attention as Asim further explained of the strange black shape on the edge of his vision every night. Of course, Aziza knew her brother was just carefully spinning his web of lies, but their father, none the wiser, rejoiced, claiming it was a sign that truly, Anubis was showing himself to Asim, further proving that Asim was best fit to become high priest of Anubis after Chigaru had moved on to the after life. Both brother and sister were excused from all their daily duties that day due to their father's pure joy. The day after, Asim and Aziza both snuck into town and were surprised to see Sefu was still hanging around. However, Aziza wasn't in much of a mood for another verbal sparring match between them, she was much too caught up in the weight on her mind that soon enough she would be of age and would be bitten by her mother, and then she would join her parents on full moons. The very thought had Aziza on edge, so she slipped away from Asim and Sefu and soon enough, she was dancing with the same belly-dancers that had taught her. Dancing was her release, it let her take her mind off everything plaguing it and allowed her to just focus on having fun as well as her own movements. She wasn't aware that soon enough, Asim and Sefu had joined the crowd watching her and the other girls, nor Asim's departure back to the temple. Both time and location as well as her surroundings had become entirely irrelevant as she lost herself within the movement. Soon enough, the sun was setting on the horizon and most of the crowd, as well as the other girls, had dispersed. However, Aziza still failed to notice, still too enraptured with her own movement. It wasn't till Sefu snatched hold of her wrist and pulled her away that she was pulled out of the mental quiet place she had been in while dancing and took notice to her surroundings. It was officially too dark for her to return back to the temple, especially on her own. So, she stayed with Sefu for the night... and one thing led to another... and when Aziza woke the next morning, the first thing she saw was Asim and Sefu fighting.
Without getting a response from either her brother or lover as to why they were fighting, Asim dragged his sister back to the temple as the sun rose and the siblings managed to sneak in without being caught and make as if they both had been home all night. After that, not even the thought of becoming of age seemed to bother Aziza, not when she was frequently sneaking out at nights to go see Sefu, much as her brother did during the days. To Aziza, that final step in becoming a true Descendant of Anubis was almost nothing to her. Not when her head was securely lost within the clouds. It was funny, roughly a year of this, and Aziza was pregnant, and yet, her father never once thought that someone could have impregnated his exquisite little girl he had hidden from the world, so it must have been a god. The truth of who fathered Aziza's child was plainly obvious to both brother and sister, but neither said anything about it, seeing no problem with letting their father believe what he would. After all, why would they crash his spirits and happiness when to leave him oblivious was better for everyone? Aziza was under constant watch and supervision now, so it was Asim that ventured out into the village to let Sefu know that he was soon to be a father.
Because he couldn't help but feel the need to risk everything to get a chance to talk to her, Asim helped Sefu sneak into the temple once again, disguised as another priest. Asim snuck Sefu through his room and into the secret chamber connecting Asim's room to Aziza's and told him to wait until he was absolutely certain there was no one in the room with Aziza before heading off to go do his duties as per usual. Despite the difficulty waiting can be when one is anxious, Sefu managed it and waited for nightfall and passed till Aziza was finally alone. She had been surprised to see him, but happy about it none the less. She told him of who her father was telling his priests had fathered the child she was impregnated with, amused by her father's assumptions.
Nine months of being confined to her room, and Aziza gave life to a son, whom she named Naeem. Though Chigaru tried to keep Naeem as sheltered as he did his own children, Naeem was quite the wild little one. As a baby he cried often, whenever he was not being held by his mother, father or uncle. As soon as he could crawl, when he was less than two feet away from all of them he would crawl to whoever was closest and begged to be picked up, as soon as he could walk, he ran about, seeking attention through being loud and rambunctious, often accidentally breaking things. Because Aziza had her little boy to keep track of now, she was outside the temple more often enough, as well as in the village with her son more often than before. One day, while browsing the market with only her little boy, 3 years of age at the time, what her father had feared happening actually occurred. The newly crowned pharaoh had been making his way through the village to get to the temple when he spotted the high priest's daughter with her son.
